At the beginning of every hike there is a topography type map highlighting the path with mileage and special sights along the way. These maps are a crucial part of any hikers journey. They allow for proper planning: preparation of a timeline, resources to pack for the route, and knowledge of the perfect picture taking opportunity. As with hiking, our adventure must begin with a plan.

After Bert, my husband, finished his residency, we decided to take a break from the normal rigors of life and explore some areas in the US that were on our radar. Our main objective was to explore a few towns and states that seemed to cater to our interests for more outdoor activities, a sense of community, better (i.e cooler) weather, and an improved match to our personalities. Both Bert and I were raised in Texas for nearly our entire lives. However, we had lived in California for about 4 years while Bert was in medical school. Spending time in California broadened our outlook on new possibilities for our life outside of Texas. Residency, ultimately, had brought us back to Texas, and our families, but we decided before settling down , we wanted to look into a few other options. Along the way, we are also hoping to explore a few national parks that have been on our to do list for a few years.

So I have spent the last week or so meticulously researching all the possible destinations, creating a spreadsheet of information layered with all the pertinent facts such as median housing costs, diversity, outdoor activities, school rankings, and more. Armed with our lists, hiking gear, our Yeti ice chest & GoPro camera, an open mind, and a sense for adventure, we plan to set out to explore.

First stop, Texas Hill Country.

More to come as the adventure continues : )
